Rick, 2002-06-11 22:36:50 Hi. I am learning to play a Breton tune I heard on a CD, and it's title was, of course, in Breton. My friends and I would like to know how to pronounce the title in Breton correctly and have an English translation of it. The title of the tune is: Gwerz ar vezhinerien I have found that "Gwerz" means something like "a sad traditional song", like a lament, I think, and that the word "ar" means "the". I have not been able to find out what "vezhinerien" means, though. A phonetic pronunciation would be great, if anyone can provide that. Thanks. Rick Re: Pronunciation and translation of a phrase Steve, 2002-06-12 08:21:14 Gwerz ar Vezhinerien = "the Ballad of the Seaweed Harvesters" (bezhin "seaweed") /ë/ = e in "the (car)"; /'.../ = stress on the following syllable /'gwèrz ë vézi'nèryën/ Cheers, Steve Re: Pronunciation and translation of a phrase Rick, 2002-06-12 23:03:45 Steve, Thanks. That's great! Th etranslation goes right with what the CD said about the tune - a lament about the hard life of wrack harvesters off the NW Breton coast. Rick Re: Pronunciation and translation of a phrase Herry, 2002-06-17 10:45:58 this song is not an old one . Write by Denez Abernot around the 70 's . you can find a new release cd of the original LP's from his band "Sorlok" on Coop Breizh edition ; |
